Understanding water's flow

How a mass of water will flow is determined by many things. However, the most important thing to know is the water's density in comparison to the water around it. Although many people think of the ocean as homogenous, in fact different parts of the ocean can have very different salinities and temperatures. Salinity and temperature determine the density of the water, and the physical oceanographers on this cruise were constantly taking these measurements from the water column to help predict the water's flow.

The more salt in water the denser it is. Thus saltier water will sink, affecting current flow.
